Ask the Doctor: Indigestion

I often experience indigestion after meals, what can I do to improve my digestion?

There are several tips that will help with digestion. It is important to eat the heaviest meal of the day at lunch and to have a lighter meal at dinner. Try to finish dinner by 7 p.m and avoid eating late at night. It is important to sit down and relax with meals and eat in a peaceful environment. Your attention should be on eating the food and not watching TV or reading the paper.

Proper food combining is also important. The most important rule of thumb is to avoid eating fruit with starches. Do eat fresh prepared organic food, and avoid canned, frozen, and left over foods. Avoid cold drinks and fried foods. Drinking mint tea and especially warm ginger teas is very beneficial.

Start the morning with warm water with a little lemon and raw honey in it. This will sweep some of the toxins, or ama that is, in the digestive tract out. Drinking about a half cup of warm water every hour will increase the digestive fire. Better yet, put a teaspoon of cumin, coriander, and fennel in a quart thermos of hot water. Drinking this throughout the day will be more effective in increasing the digestive fire.

If your digestive problems are more severe you can take the formula Digest Ease for gas and bloating or Aci Balance if you have acid indigestion. These are available from me upon request. You would also benefit from taking two capsules of Triphala an hour before going to bed. There is more information on digestion and Tripahala in my book Renew Yourself: Keys to Rejuvenation and Youthing.

Getting your Digestion and Elimination dialed in is imperative to improving your health.
